THE RISE OF THE INDUS CIVILISATION
- Madhusudan Mishra
I had engaged myself in the decipherment of the Indus script from the beginning of 1994. After three years of hard labour, I could identify phonemically a good number of signs. The Indus script consists of three types of phonetic symbols, namely : the animal figures, geometrical figures, and the numerals. The numerals appeared to reflect in the syllabic order of the Māheśvara sutras of the Pānini’s grammar, and thus one – third of the Indus script was phonetically identified. In the duplicate texts, many animal and geometrical figures too were identified. The pre-edited form of the Mahesvara sutras was the syllary of the Indus language or the ur Sanskrit.
In 1997, a whole text of three signs was read. It was : ta na sa. Later, the same text was noticed in three graphic variants. In Mahadevan’s compilation of the texts, they have been numbered thus : 2659, 1365, 1376 and 3103. Gradually, some other texts too were read. But it was difficult to interpret them. The vocabulary of the primitive people changed after every generation, because they were always on move. Their words were monosyllabic, and there was no grammar in the speech. The word ka stood for ‘water’ at one place, and for ‘milk’ at another place. But soon they began to form bisyllabic words. Can one imagine that they formed a bisyllabic word hi-ma, which meant ‘milk on the top of the mountain’?
Later, they gave up the nomadic habit. The clause grā (=wandering) ma(stopped) contracted as grāma meaning ‘village’. They built houses for themselves. The clause da(suffering) ma (stopped) contracted as dama(house). They also became farmers and began to watch the weather. They said:
h_ a da, cā sa (4536) = It is very hot. The field are drying up. ci ra, h_ a da( 4460) = A long time has passed. It is very hot. cā su, ra na sa (2117) = The fields are drying up. The crops are perishing.
They also used to predict unpleasant weather : ru ksa gha 2662 = It will be very hot. They warned against the sun – stroke. Rau na su, dhe sa 2449 = There may be death due to heat. Mind it. They also waited for the rain : me gha 4466 = It will rain. bu ci ra 4050 = The rain comes late. They realized the value of water: va na su nā sa 2300 = The waters cause plants to grow. Know, see.
While they were going on founding villages and building houses, they were also afraid of the wild beasts and reptiles. They say : pra da 5506 = The snakes bite. In Vedic, there is prdāku for snake.
They domesticated
cows first of all. When the cows entered the stable towards the evening, it was
a fine view to see. They said : gā va = (they) go into the stable. Therefore,
even the Sanskrit grammarians say: gacchatīti gauh ( A cow is so called because
it goes into the stable). Patanjali knew the colloquial gāvī. In pl. it was
gāva – sa, which contracted as gāvas in Vedic. It’s –vas became bōs in Latin,
and it’s gā became cū in Germanic. But the domestication of the ‘horses’ was not
an easy affair. It’s hind leg was dangerous. They say : śa pha ja 1194 = The
hind leg of the horse causes wound. The horse was called ‘śapha – vat in
Vedic.
When a thief entered the village at night, they used to cry out : co ra 4359 = The thief is running away. da sa 1197 = (They) live in the mountainous villages. da syu = They run to the mountainous villages. They were the Dāsa and Dasyu of the RV. Then the dogs also began to bark : dha dha 1025 = The dogs bark ( to terrify the thieves). This clause has become dhat : in the colloquial speech.
They constructed the ox –cart. They say : na na tha 2592 = The two wheels turn round. This clause has become the verb nart(nrt) ‘to dance’ in Sanskrit.
The mill-stone had been invented. They say : dra sa tha dha 1410 = The stone moves round the post, grinds. dra sa tha has contracted as drsád( the grinding stone).
There was arrangement for fodder for the domesticated animals. The text la pa ma 1267 says : the seasonal grass perishes on time, which means that it should be served to the animals before it gets dry. This clause has contracted as ulupam (tender grass).
The text va na ra 8011 ( in the dwelling the man lives ) has contracted as vanar in vanar - gu, -sad, which is certainly different from dama. It was perhaps a lighted house, having small windows near the roof.
dhī rau dha 2241(during the day the sun is hot) intends to say that pots should be manufactured at night and should be exposed to sun during the day. Colloquially, rau.. dā is the strong heat of the sun.
h_ a ma ha 410(a house gives comfort) points to some more comfortable house, which has contracted to amā ( in house) in Vedic and also traveled to Europe. Cf. Eng. Home, Germ. Heim.
h_ a ci ra 4267 ( there is light through oil) indicates that oil- lamps had come in use.
va tha 3081(there is water in the circle) suggests the invention of the modern village wells. It has fossilized as ud(water), which is a verb in the RV.
They carried water to the distantly located fields through an instrument which is now called dhos : cā su dho sa 4344 = If the fields get dry, siphon waters into it.
There was a public latrine system. On the gate, it was written : ha ga = defacate.
They also refer to the Soma plants : h_ aō ma su dhe su ra ci bu 2518.
When, at the beginning of the summer the snowy mountain released waters, they said : na ra ( The river has begun flowing), ra ga( make haste), va ga ( irrigate) 4502. The first clause has now fossilised as nālā.
The Gayatri mantra of the RV has it’s seed in an Indus text, which runs thus : ta gra sa ra gha 4325. Initially, it had a very primitive meaning : From the womb( of the horizon) (ta) the sun(gra) emerges(sa). It will shine(ra-gha). When the future affix was gone, it was a phrase : the brilliant light of the emerging sun. The sage Viśvamitra saw this text with the eyes of a seer : devasya savitur varenyam bhargah . Therefore, he enjoined :
Tat savitur varenyam
Bhargo devasya dhīmahi
Dhiyo yo nah pracodayāt.
“We would receive the brilliant light of the divine sun who may inspire our thought.”
